Girly Hour
Solomon Frank and Rose Kingdom-Barron
Girly Hour is an interdisciplinary performance work by composer-performer Solomon Frank & comedian/clown/performance artist Rose Kingdom-Barron. The work collides experimental instrumental music with the hyper-feminised vernacular of Bimbotica: an ongoing investigation into the bimbo as both a movement language, cultural stereotype & a site of feminist & queer agency. This encompasses allusions to the aesthetics of reality television, drag, & the everyday labour of "being a girl." Together, Girly Hour creates an environment where experimental music, comedy, live art, & pop-cultural aesthetics collide. We are interested in making work that is both experimentally rigorous & radically accessible, embracing humour, spectacle, participation, & sensory excess as legitimate strategies for experimental music and movement practice. By blurring distinctions between "high" and "low" culture, Girly Hour asks audiences to reconsider where experimental sound art can happen, who it is for, and what kinds of cultural languages it can speak.
Girly Hour was commissioned by Audible Edge and premiered at Fremantle Town Hall in April 2025. Audible Edge is Western Australia’s leading experimental music festival curated by record label Tone List. The work was additionally supported by a residency at Goolugatup Heathcote Arts Centre in Perth. Alongside the premiere of the work itself, we have previously performed iterations of Girly Hour in party and outdoor settings at Bad Dog (Sydney) and Barba (Melbourne).
